Birds in Flight
One of my favourite activities in nature photography is getting birds in flight and interacting with each other. With Owls and other raptors this can take years of watching and learning behaviour.
This specific Snowy owl was a resident of Whitby Harbour for almost 6 weeks on a cold winter. It would sit off the pier or sometimes on one of the local buildings and hunt ducks along the ice edge and in the harbour. I got this shot as it started a hunt over the harbour and flew almost directly over me.
Great Grey Owl returning back to starting point after a failed hunt. I watched this owl hunt for a good hour before dusk on a rather cold afternoon.
Osprey hovering over the river, only a few seconds to get a shot and it was pretty much fully back lit. Makes for a nice shot of the spread wings.
Barn swallow grabbing a quick bite on a foggy but calm evening. We still haven’t really seen the sun since we got back to Canada so I’ll keep on shooting greys and high key shots. At least it isn’t raining for a few minutes.
This hawk was perched on the rocks above us as we started our hike through Tucson Mountain park.
A tern hovering in place with the help of a good head wind giving it time to determine if there is something worth dropping in on.
2 Barred owls this weekend down at Thickson woods along with the 2 others I saw in the usual area. Along with the 2 Great horned owls it was a pretty good rainy day.
Mississippi Kite eating the latest catch while flying. No time, it seems, to sit and eat or you will miss the bonanza of bugs.
Osprey hovering over something that caught its eye in the creek below.
Got down to Allendale, SC again this year but didn't get quite the same number of Kites as last year, probably missed it by a week or so.
We waited for about 40 minutes for a good take off shot in the nice evening light. Bald Eagle at Big Pine Key, Florida.
Snowy Egret feeding in Great Salt Pond on Block Island, RI.
